Description:
I'm sure everyone here has heard the name Modest Mouse and at least have heard the song "Float On" from their more recent album "Good News for People Who Love Bad News." However, the band's earlier material is really where the showcase their music brilliance and innovation. This album, released in 1997 is their best album (in my opinion) and one of the best displays of indie rock in the history of music. Every single song is filled with emotion and revolutionary musicianship for the time. The highlight of the band is easily frontman Issac Brock's lyrics, vocal delivery, and guitar work. Brock isn't afraid to speak his mind, and Modest Mouse is known for having some of the best (albeit abstract) lyrics in modern music. He utilizes metaphor, clever wordplay, and religious imagery to expand on the several recurring themes that Brock explores throughout the record. Aside from the lyrics, the musicianship is young and reckless, but still magnificent and sure to impress anyone (especially those hearing it for the first time). All I can say is that if by the end of the first song you aren't sold, you should reconsider how you listen to music, because "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" is one of the most beautiful and poignant songs ever written. Seriously get on this.

S. Carey All We Grow 2010

Let's get this out of the way now because I'm sure he already knows he will never outlive the comparisons: This is the drummer of Bon Iver. Yes, he is close friends with Justin Vernon. Yes, it utilizes the same formula, incorporating the same sort of curl-up-and-cry in a cabin in the woods atmospheric ambient folk type music. Hell, it even has the same number of tracks as For Emma. Is it as good as the aforementioned Bon Iver album? I'll admit that I doubted him at first, but if not this comes extremely close. S. Carey is phenomenal at building a mood through his lovely fingerpicking, vocal layering, piano, and sparse drumming to create one of the most instantly beautiful albums I've heard in some time. This is a record that I feel can only be fully appreciated alone. While the ties to Bon Iver are certainly going to help how fast this album spreads, it can quite easily stand on it's own. This is going to hopefully take a lot of people by surprise, and it's something you'll want to have by your side as fall and winter approach.

The BrOnx-The Bronz 2

Label: Swami
Year: 2006

This record came out on a couple different labels, on a couple different formats, but this is the superior version, the vinyl version Swami put out, 1000 pressed complete with two bonus tracks. Also of note, this is the second of three self titled lps The Bronx have released to this point. I can see how you could get confused.
Did you ever hear The Bronx? Do you like Murder City Devils, but sometimes wish they would 86 the keyboards? Then you'd probably like The Bronx. Do you like Rocket From The Crypt, but sometimes wish they would 86 the horns? Then you'd probably like The Bronx. Do you like cameo appearances from the lesser known and least important members of Guns N Roses? Then you'd probably like The Bronx. Do you like fat, balding, men with little-to-no night vision? Then you'd probably like me.

Matt K. Shrugg - Gone Ashtray (2010)

his is another release from Tic Tac Totally. The information I found on Matt K. Shrugg is that he's in the bands Pizzas and Zodiac Killers. I've not gotten the chance to listen to either of these groups, but I easily found this solo album. Naturally, the sound of the record is similar to many of the other posts. Noticing that I have a mild obsession? Anyway, what makes this stand out a bit is that he seems more adventurous in his composition. While there is nothing wrong with the loud garage punk I have posted thus far, in fact I can't get enough of it, this is a nice lesson on how the style can be pushed around. Not every song can be considered as venturesome, but they surely will get the heart pulsating. They're selling this shit on vinyl too, which is pretty great and I don't point that out often enough.

The Bitters - Have a Nap Hotel (2010)

I just recently snatched up some music by the Bitters because of the frequency I saw their name popping up when reading about some of the other recently posted bands. This absolutely falls within my current theme of noise, punk, and garage. Have a Nap Hotel is just an EP, as I haven't given sufficient listening time to the full-length they've also released this year. As this post is being done shortly before I have to prepare for work I am gonna keep it tight. There's distortion, loud drumming, ghostly singing and all sorts of appealing qualities. Basically, it is a good listen but certainly not the most amazing thing I've heard lately. However, I think that bar is pretty high so see what you think of it and let me know.

GeorGe Trio_Open Mputh, O Wisp

One of them albums that makes you hate me even more. Piano, guitar, and drums, all seemingly improv, but the inclusion of the track "Intimate Addition," probably the most intense tropical song to ever exist, suggests otherwise, leaving you to speculate on whether or not these guys are just making noise. I guess it's up to you to decide.

1. A Comedy in the Sun
2. Memo To an Apparition
3. Plum Sign

Black Pyramid – Black Pyramid

Ra Ra Riot: The Orchard

After The Rhumb Line getting mediocre reception (despite me absolutely loving it) I was curious to see where the group would go, if anywhere. Luckily we have The Orchard, a continuation of the bands warm chamber-pop sound infused with violin and cello with added doses of melancholy and slower paces. The strings add so much to the slower songs, and the band still writes great upbeat tunes like Boy and Too Dramatic which wouldn't feel at all out of place on The Rhumb Line. Not really that much of a departure but possibly an improvement from one of my favorite indie-pop acts.

Petethepiratesquid and Grave, Shovel... Lets Go!

This is the split between the two incredible bands Petethepiratesquid and Grave, Shovel... Lets Go!

GSLG keeps their old style, and it sounds really really good. Just as it did on the demo and the split with Me And Goliath. I've been waiting to hear new stuff from them, and to hear that they are still as good as they were before makes me glad.
The same kind of goes with the squids, they keep on doing what they do best, playing music their way. Some new songs, like Kafka Fanshirt, is A+ material.

Comanechi - Crime Of Love (2009)

t is simply a mistake on my part not to have posted this earlier. Back when this blog was pretty new I posted an EP by Comanechi that I'd become enamored with and still go back to listen to regularly. While those were rough cuts of some of the tracks that appear on this debut album by this English duo. It is some rather intense garage punk/noise that falls in line with bands like Coachwhips, the Hunches, and the Intelligence. Unlike those groups though, it features a female vocalist which begs comparisons to Best Coast or Vivian Girls, but I do believe quite noticeably Comanechi is heavier and louder. She is one of the hottest singers I've seen though, I suggest googling some photos. I really recommend this if you've been keen on the other garage stuff about lately.

Kvelertak – Kvelertak (2010)

¿Black n’ Roll? Mas bien diría hardcore punk con black metal bien cañero y sludge. En general es un disco muy entretenido. Se los recomiendo mucho.

Anti You
