DoPler:Songs to Defy
there will be no more arguements made. the jury has its verdict and that verdict is doppler is the best band in france right now. its not even close.............im going to coin a new term right now: epic noise rock, because thats exactly what this barbwire masterpiece of a record is............i thought "si nihil aliud" was good...this one one-ups that record in every possible way, noisier, more complex, better recording values, theyve reached another pinnacle.......no song is under 4 minutes long here, just exciting and enthralling....two words that i bet have never been used in the context of a review of a noise rock album before.......this came out in 2008 and im really not sure why i dident hear about it then.........but holy shit is this some fucking amazing, energizing stuff...if you dont like this you either have no taste or are braindead.....ok, so maybe our musical tastes arent alike......what am i saying? if your reading this blog and have downloaded and liked anything ive posted, youll probably eat this up with a spoon:

Poison Idea:Pick Your King
Artist: Poison Idea
Album: Pick Your King 7"
Release: 1983
Label: Fatal Erection
Tracklist:
1. Think Twice
2. It's An Action
3. This Thing Called Progress
4. In My Headache
5. Underage
6. Self Abuse
7. Cult Band
8. Last One
9. Pure Hate
10. Castration
11. Reggae (I Hate)
12. Give It Up
13. Think Fast
Rarely has a band burst out of the gates like Poison Idea. The Pick Your King 7" is the perfect hardcore record as played by the perfect hardcore band: short, fast, and catchy blasts of pure aggression played by the only band with the right to claim they were the most hedonistic around. [Note to wannabes: excessive fast food is as mandatory as dope.] Almost every song is a classic, with "Think Twice," "It's An Action," "Self Abuse," "Cult Band," and "Pure Hate" being my favorites. Please note that I just named almost half the 7", so you know you're dealing with quality. Or someone who likes everything he hears. Both, probably.
There's not much for me to say that hasn't already been said about this classic. A serious contender for best hardcore record ever released, Pick Your King firmly placed Poison Idea, the original fat guy hardcore band, in the forefront of the genre, a place they would remain for almost ten years, which, in punk years (like dog years), is an eternity. Is it J.C. or Elvis?

Combatwoundedveteran:Duck Down For Torso
Combatwoundedveteran; one word, one band, one amazing record. I love the song "The very first Pterodactyl." This one is a bit different from their other releases, which usually consist of the regular stop/go craziness in less than a minute per song. There are only four on here, and they're all relatively long, especially coming from these guys.
TRACKS:
1. Activate the Corpses
2. The Very First Pterodactyl
3. 15 Minutes on a Forklift
4. Folded Space Mapping Unexpected Ordinance

CasTeVet

5 REVOLUTIONS: IM A FREE MAN
Before the completists get all uppity, I know that this download is NOT the entire album. However, this is just too fun to keep to myself, maybe you can track down a complete version of it. 5 Revolutions were yet another delicious pop-psych group from Zambia. Recently I learned that many of these great Zambian recordings we have been loving here were made possible through the tireless work of Mr. Edward Khuzwayo, a Zambian promoter and music entrepeneur. Sadly Khuzwayo passed away recently. His very informative obituary can be read here. R.I.P Mr. Khuzwayo, here's the 5 Revolutions.

Long Fin Kille:Valentine""
..."and now for something completely different.."
taking a different turn with this entry.....not a "hardcore" band by any means, yet a very memorable one to say the least.......long fin killie hailed from scotland and where active through much of the 90s..i saw them in 1996 with a shoegaze band from LA called medicine (this was in the same week that i saw engine kid and iceburn)....their vocalist, luke sutherland went on to do a trip-hop outfit called bows and after that wrote a couple prize winning books, "venus as a boy" and "jellyroll".....he also apparently plays violin for mogwai when they tour.......anways LFK was a very unique band, melding elements of indie rock, celtic music, noise, string sections and electronics to create an amazing musical landscape combined with sutherland's wry lyricism.....valentino was their second lp....it might take you a couple listens to really get into this since there is alot to take in in each song, but its a musical journey well worth taking.......
hope i dident sound too much like some rolling stone/spin critic ith that paragraph.....but a kickass band and a fucking great album....

SLack:Bates Stamper CS
Artist: Slack
Album: Bates Stamper CS
Release: 1991
Label: Simple Machines
Tracklist:
1. Bates Stamp
2. Word Traffic
3. Shrunken Head
4. Glass Man
5. Basket Case
First off, thanks to Jimmy Buttons for ripping this little gem, as it didn't seem to be in digital existence until the benevolent one put it on his blog. I first heard Slack on the Simple Machines D.C.-Baltimore-Richmond comp Neapolitan Metropolitan 3x7", which had their song "Word Traffic" on the D.C. 7". Unsurprisingly, the D.C. 7" slays the rest (featuring Lilys, Whorl, and Dave Grohl's project Late), but that's neither here no there. I had never heard of them before, but instantly recognized Tsunami and Simple Machines leader Jenny Toomey's voice and the song stood out as a clear highlight amongst most everyone else.
Featuring members of the aforementioned Tsunami, the Hated, and Ida, Slack's sound is definitely of the early 90s D.C. indie school. Actually, it kind of sounds like Tsunami meets adult contemporary rock. I know that sounds terrible, but it's actually pretty good. Actually, it's great! The band only released this tape, Bates Stamper, as part of the Tool Cassette Series that Simple Machines was doing. The title track and "Word Traffic" are my two favorite songs on the tape, both exemplifying the band's affinity for great, untamed boy-girl vocals and great guitar interplay between the shredders.
So, for all you indie pop nerds out there, here are five more gems for you to unearth. For the rest of you with more "discerning tastes," EVASIVE MANEUVER.

Winning: This is an add for Cigarettes
Winning is a very odd band. This is their first release, and I'm not sure how to review this one at all...I guess they're an indie alternative band that was dropped, and now is broken. Think a broken music box that still plays but doesn't sound...right... They pull it off with ease, and honestly I'd recommend this to ayone who likes Calabi Yau or U.S. Maple. A much more laid back sound.

COlT Discography
late 90s melodic german stuff..........someone (i think it was marianne hofstetter) said they sounded like "rusty james meets dinosaur jr"....i guess thats not really a bad starting point....im not sure if this band actually had rusty james members in it but the influence is definatly there......poppy, catchy, but still a bit rough on the edges, this is the ultimate sunny day party music....both lps are included here.....and i love both almost as much as i love the rusty james lp......but not quite... http://www.mediafire.com/?mdywozjdnz5

A lost classic of early 80s west coast hardcore, Rebel Truth's lone 7" has seemed to fallen through the cracks of time. This Sacramento, California band plays fast, trashy hardcore with sick melodic hooks and very peculiar yet powerful vocals spouting off lyrics of standard hardcore fare: the fetishization of capital, keeping the scene strong, bureaucratic oppression, and championing the merits of Reaganomics. This band was so good that they were able to count Morrissey as an avid fan, who even initiated written correspondence between the two parties. This matters and should affect the way in which we view the music.
While relegated to hardcore obscurity, we can still enjoy their incredible 7", as well as their contributions to the Charred Remains, Not So Quiet On The Western Front, and We Got The Power compilations.http://www.mediafire.com/?d2z2dz1njzm

Kazan – Maslow 0 (2010)
enre: Screamo
country: France
notes: Yes, I have become a lazy bastard and posts here have become quite rare. But the sheer awesomeness of this release has kicked me out of hibernation. Kazan continues the French tradition of some of the best screamo tunes a country can offer. Amazing melodies, stunning vocals and a great ability to set up a specific mood. Definitely check these guys out, it is absolutely worth your time.http://www.mediafire.com/?om1ttxm2ytm

Junk CulTure
saw junk culture open for phantogram. fucking amazing live.
"Junk Culture is a new project by Deepak Mantena, who was recently signed to Illegal Art. The first Junk Culture EP, ““West Coast,” was released on October 27, 2009. On “West Coast,” Deepak’s samples are all run through a handheld recorder that gives his constructions a gritty lo-fi loop-based sound, mixing fractured vocals, pop hooks, and an overall euphoric warmth. Described by press as “sound tapestries” somewhere between “ambient, dance mash-up, and glitchy electronica” (Todd Olmstead), “West Coast” is a manifesto of energetic raw sound that transcends rigid genres."

Black Flag: Jeaousy
Really the only official Chavo-fronted Black Flag release. Many hold Mr. Ron Reyes as the best Black Flag frontman of all time. Well, I don't know about that, but this was my first exposure to the band that would ultimately have the most impact on me. Surely everyone has this already, but this post is more about the sentimental value to me. Maybe it's a been a while since you listened to it...whatever.

Ache Hour Credo DiscoGraphy
so we're in the middle of the olympics and i feel like taking part in the olympic spirit.....so im posting a band from canada today..........and from vancouver no less! i dont know much about this band other than that ache hour credo existed at some point in the late 90s and was an offshoot of m-blanket, a band im even less familiar with than AHC.......that said, this is one hell of a cd.........rough melodic punk/emo/hardcore with a shitload of energy.........hot water music eat your heart out..........some of it is more moody and borders on the mid 90s screaming hardcore/emo thing but for the most part this is pretty upbeat.........i used to think (and to a degree i still do) that all of the good canadian bands came from quebec and ontario with a few good ones from winnipeg too (swallowing shit/head hits concrete/malfaction) with edmonton/calgary/regina being virtual deserts for hardcore/emo/indie rock..........aside from strain, submission hold and these guys, vancouver never seemed to offer me anything that great musically either....maybe there are a shitton of good bands from that area that im overlooking but until i hear them AHC will be the only band from canada's west that i can consider truely superb.

Weekend Nachos:UnForGivable
So, you rike the powuhviorence? I give you powuhviorence! These guys were signed onto Relapse Records for this album after their Punish and Destroy LP, which actually only featured two of the members shining on this one. Good if you're into it. I'm late in posting this; a lot of others have gotten it up before me, but I like to think I gave it a bit of time to circulate before killing profits. Nothing else needs to be said. You should know them by now.

Georgia Anne Muldrow - Kings Ballad

Artist: Loop Album: A Gilded Eternity
Tracklist:
1. Vapour
2. Afterglow
3. The Nail Will Burn
4. Blood
5. Breathe Into Me
6. From Centre To Wave
7. Be Here Now
While I tend to prefer bands on the poppier end of the shoegaze spectrum, I've still found that one of my favorite bands is the U.K.'s Loop, whose sound is more gloomy and psychedelic than most of its peers. The band relies heavily on pounding repetition in the vein of their more krautrock influences, like Can. This repetition creates a disturbingly hypnotic sound consisting of dense bass and waves of feedback, all while possessing Loop's affinity for writing incredible riffs.
From my understanding, most consider their debut LP, Heaven's End, to be their best, but their last studio LP, A Gilded Eternity, happens to be my favorite. The album opens up with the one-two punch of "Vapour" and "Afterglow," which are two of the best songs the band ever wrote. The former slowly builds its way into aural catharsis, while the latter amazes with its dancing guitar lines that weave in and out of each other. "The Nail Will Burn" possesses a total prog-metal vibe, and while that may sound absolutely terrible to some, I mean it only in how it manages to be both punishing and art school wimpy. Also, you could probably headbang to it in your [dorm] room.
I don't feel like going through every song here because they're all incredible, so I'll let you figure it out on your own. Loop rules. I find only one other contemporary to be in their league and that is the great Spacemen 3, who've apparently accused Loop of stealing all their ideas from them. I don't give much credence to that, but maybe that's just because I enjoy Loop more than Spacemen 3.

Emily

Reversal of Man - This is Medicine
Incluye Booklet.

Teens
Lo-fi acoustic emo, if you enjoy Die Emperor! Die! and Broken Chords Can Sing A Little you will most certanly enjoy this. 2 guitars and some heartbroken screams. They have a whole lot of plain instrumental songs, so if you dont like the singing and such its really worth picking up anyway. And it was recorded in some snowy December days in New Jersey.

Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Magical Mystery Chambers
Calenlo..

Even though “chillwave” was born, lived, and died in the 2009, Toro Y Moi is trying reignite it in 2010. After the Hipster Runoff post on Toro Y Moi, I was a bit reluctant to listen to this. I quickly got over that and have been listening to “Blessa” non-stop. The electronics reminded me of Nosaj Thing’s beats, with that nice touch of pretty psych-pop. The rest doesn’t disappoint either, with the falsetto-ish “Imprint After” and the dancey “Thanks Vision”. Toro Y Moi will be at SXSW, and then will be on tour for a straight month after all over the US. Keep the shitty genre “chillwave” alive and download this.

Call me whatever the fuck you want. FRANK ZAPPA RULES. I thought it might be time to post another album by this great musician, since the last time I did was on the fateful day of Nov. 18th, 2007. Wowza wowza wowza. This is one my favorites, more jazzy than other stuff by him, and features the great voice of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART on vocals on the track "Willie the Pimp."

TIGER FLOWERS – “THE LAST HORSE” EXCLUSIVE PREMIER
http://www.metalsucks.net/2010/02/16/tiger-flowers-the-last-horse-exclusive-premier/#comment-407580
Broadcast - Haha Sound (2003)
I had the pleasure of seeing Broadcast perform as duo with Atlas Sound opening at Lees Palace in Toronto last November, and I have to say, as difficult as the first half of it was, I loved every minute of it. Cryptic projections, noisey no-nonsense low frequencies that put my body into a microvibrational state and physically shook the air inside my lungs. After the first half, they played a more traditional pop song set with a good deal of songs off this album: a record arranged more as a full-piece rock band with experimental and electronic tendencies, rather than the more avant-garde work the duo are creating these days...
This album displays some amazing songwriting and production (you can hear the tape) with obvious influence from krautrock experimentalists, 60s sunshine psychedelia and folk music. Even though here they deviate away from elements that initially drew the likeness, it's easy to see how they were once often compared to Stereolab.
Other than that it's kind of hard to describe the air of of this album. There's something unfalteringly beautiful and dark about it that you have to hear for yourself; it's always this kind of stuff that I have the most amount of difficulty in describing what it means to me.

The Black Heart Rebellion

Are you spending Valentine's day all to your lonesome? Of course you are! Why the hell else would you have visited ICDT then if you were a complete loner, right? Right. Instead of participating in your normal routine of crying over lost love, eating the sweethearts actual couples didn't have the time to ingest, watching old seasons of the Office on Netflix late into the night, and, ultimately, contemplating suicide, why not spend a lovely and romantic evening with DC's Lotus Fucker, a fulfilling mate and potential life partner?
If you were unlucky enough to catch my top ten list of 2009, you would have noticed that I spoke very highly of Lotus Fucker's LP, ranking it at #4. I was very fond of their demo tape, which was good enough for me to consider them to be the best D.C. punk band at the moment. Still, as good as it was, I was not prepared for the leap of quality from the demo to their debut LP.
For this album, the band retains their conceptual sets of songs, with the A-side entitled "The Island Closest To Heaven" and the B-side, a rerecording of the demo, entitled "Answer=Bloodwashed Noise." Still here are both the anime aesthetic (in even more glory) and the seemingly English-to-Japanese-back to-English-Google translated song titles, which are even wackier on the newer set. This may turn some off, but it's certainly somewhat unique and very enjoyable.
The first thing I noticed about the actual music is that the production fits more of what the band is going for than their demo in that they are now able to take the noise-not-music approach that bands like Confuse took, as well as many contemporary Japanese crust bands are following. While heavy on the high end of things, the bass tone is absolutely incredible. I can't exactly describe it, but it's perfect for this. Additionally, the guitar sound is better and its buzzing-quality actually resembles classic bands such as the Swankys and Disclose.
I'm going to start with the B-side here, as it is the older, more familiar material. I'm normally somewhat opposed to rerecordings, but this is a complete exception to the rule. The production is much improved and rawer. The songs themselves are not drastically different, but the arrangements are far superior and the band is airtight. The Power Rangers solo in the finale "The Rock That Will Not Be Withered By The Waterfall," as well as the other Death Side-esque solos on the album, can (bear with me here) only really be described as heroic.
"The Island Closest To Heaven" actually improves on the breathtaking "Answer=Bloodwashed Noise" set. Still, it's not unfamiliar. "Flower On A Precipice" actually creates a very similar feeling to the guitar theme from "Black Dog," however, it is in no way lazy songwriting. The other highlights are numerous: the ending of "The Herd That Drinks Dew Drops" possesses the refrain "we are, we are the herd" and it's the oddest thing I think I've ever sung along to. "To Wield The Sword That Doesn't Cut" might be my favorite song on the whole album, based purely on the fact that it has the coolest fucking bassline. And, like the end of "Answer=Bloodwashed Noise," the new set ends on a solo-heavy note with "Memories In The Rain, Falling From The Heavens."
Both of these sets were written independently from one another, yet fit together perfectly, so the decision of releasing this as an LP as opposed to two different 7"s was definitely a wise one. Additionally, while they were written as individual sets, not meant to be taken as individual songs, the songs themselves hold up on their own accord, which is truly impressive. Fortunately for the band, Lotus Fucker occupies an interesting space in punk, as their music appeals to so many different crowds. This truly is one of the best punk releases of the 2009, hands down.
Be sure to check them out in and around the D.C./Baltimore area and get stoked for their summer tour with the Wankys and Chaos Destroy, in which they will have their split 7" with the Wankys.

Suicidal Tendencies MEGAPOST

Crain:HATER
This fills a very recent request, that I just so happen to see as I was preparing to make my evening post (not entirely different from my morning b.m. mind you), and thought, "why not Crain?". Sure. Why not Crain indeed.
I'm frankly surprised that this one wasn't already floating around on this website before, but after a cursory check, it doesn't appear to be in the archives, so let's remedy that.
I think you will find this record particularly enjoyable if you tend to like both your math rock and your post-hardcore (of the D.C. influenced variety that is). Not unlike other Louisville bands of the age (and before), Crain took the loud/quiet dynamics and stuttering tempos of math rock and married that the vein-bulging sincerity and passion of the Revolution Summer bands. Not a bad idea of course, and the results certainly speak for themselves.
Great, great record.
If it helps, or in case you're interested, the members of Crain were, are, or always will be in; Rodan, Endpoint (did someone say "In A Time Of Hate"?), Shipping News, The For Carnation, Dead Child, Parlour, Cerebellum, Able To Act, Matmos, The Soft Pink, Disc, and The Grand Prize. So that's pretty alright, huh?

this was this french band's first stab at playing rough, ugly metallic hardcore in the vein of carcass or unruh after switching styles from the messy screamy multivocalled french emo thing they used to do......the results where astounding.....although somewhat more dog-eared and unfocused than the devastatingly efficient brutality of "profane", these 5 songs nonetheless exhibit some vicious fuck-ugly power......the "habeas corpus" lp is also included here so you can get a sense of what this band sounded like before their metal days.......still brutal and noisy but in a much more emo way with duelling male/female vocals......

Danish screamo-band, their first EP. Not so exaclty quoted from one of the members: "We kind of just wanted to get these songs recorded, so that we are done with them as we dont think they are up to the quality of our newer songs."
I think it kicks ass pretty bad, the first song is a plain killer.
They are setting up a festival in Denmark as well, with some killer line-up with bands like Aussitot Mort and Petethepiratesquid and so on, called Dance Tonight!
So, check the band out and their festival, its going to be and epic weekend!

Navy School

Artist: RVIVR
Tracklist:
1. Derailer
2. Real Mean
Derailer is the second 2009 release by RVIVR, following their debut Life Moves 7". If you liked that first record, you will most likely enjoy this record. There's less material on Derailer, one longer song to each side, which is kind of a disappointment because the band managed to pack four songs all averaging three minutes on the first record. The title song is a pop-punk epic about gentrification. Nothing new content-wise here ("The west side, the bad part of town. It's a cheap place to live so the white punks move in..."). The song is great though. I feel a bit uneasy saying this, but it even tails-off with a brass section, which actually rides smoothly above the mid-tempo pop rhythms *swallow*. Side two is a bit weirder, its a gruffly-sung acoustic track about some sort of former relationship. I don't really like acoustic music but if you're a fan of that sort of thing you'll probably enjoy it. That love-able tinny quality is still present throughout here.
THIS RECORD IS STILL AVAILABLE. SUPPORT! The Life Moves 7" came in tastefully done recycled cardboard, and while I haven't seen a physical copy of Derailer, I'm sure it rules.

Stereolab - Switched On (1992)
There's a little record store around the corner from where I live that I'd been meanings to go check out for the longest time but haven't due to the fact that my turntable is currently broken. Just for kicks, my friend Alex and I finally went to browse the little shop earlier today and to my surprise they had a little section of relatively cheap CDs. This was the first one that really grabbed my attention. I was unfamiliar with anything that came out really early in Stereolabs career (my favourite album of theirs is probably Dots and Loops) this came a really pleasant and unfamiliar listen. Apparently this is a compilation album of their first releases. Lots of motoriks, amazing synthesizer tones and simple but attractive hooks, a real sonic treat.
"Switched On (also known as Switched On Stereolab or Switched On Volume 1) is a compilation of Stereolab's first three releases, and was originally released in 1992. The album's name is in tribute to Switched-On Bach and other similar titles from the late 1960s to 1970s that feature Moog synthesizers as the primary instrument.[1] Switched On was later licensed to Slumberland Records for a US release, and Rough Trade Germany, for that country, both in 1992."

So, as I'm sure many of you fellers know, European screamo bands are super fucking popular these days. It's pretty dead in the States, but in Europe, there's an overabundance of awesome, intense, and crazy screamo all over the place. This is a great example of this, a really overly talented screamo outfit from Germany. They have a new release called the Morse Zeichen CD-ep on Tor Johnson Records, you should get that shit, too.

Hats Off, Gentlemen
was a 5-piece screamo/melodic hardcore band from Vancouver, British Columbia who shared members with the Vancouver band Sunday Morning Paper. I believe they formed some time in 2006 and they broke up during the summer of last year. This was requested a really long time ago and I never could seem to find it mainly because I never really tried, but here you go. Also, sorry for never posting. Seriously. I should be returning home in a few months or so though, so hopefully I'll be posting more. Enjoy.

The White Stripes - The White Stripes (1999)
After De Stijl, this is my favourite White Stripes album. Had a massive influence on me and my taste in music while growing up. For some reason the strongest memory I have of this album is loading the CD (remember those?) into my Xbox and playing it over the car radio in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Explosive, propulsive raw garage rock. An essential listen, in my books.
I'm passing out and exhausted from school and practicing for a show I have coming up this Friday so I'm just gonna Wikipedia it from here, all apologies:
"Jack White's voice is a singular, evocative combination of punk, metal, blues, and backwoods while his guitar work is grand and banging with just enough lyrical touches of slide and subtle solo work... Meg White balances out the fretwork and the fretting with methodical, spare, and booming cymbal, bass drum, and snare... All D.I.Y. punk-country-blues-metal singer/songwriting duos should sound this good."

Artist: Pollution Album: 120608 CS
Tracklist:
1. Upsidedown Trough [Live]
2. Failure [Live]
3. Black Commune [Live]
4. tiny.black.burns [Live]
5. drop.die [Live]
6. Reds [Live]
7. Fuck Hope [Live]
8. The Crazy Girl (Black Flag)
9. Familiar And Plain (Honor Role)
Pollution is back in a big way with this cassette, which consists of a live documentation of their insane live show and two covers on the flipside. First off, while minimal, the packaging on this release is still very impressive and continues the winning streak of quality releases from Florida's Vinyl Rites.
While this tape does somewhat function as a stop-gap release between their last two tape and vinyl releases and their upcoming stuff (which will be amazing!), it's still great. While obviously not the same as being there, the live set captured on the A-side "120608" is great. The set list is strong and the sound quality good. They also keep things around fifteen minutes, so it never becomes stale. Also, and maybe this is just the quality of the recording at play, but the sporadic clapping in between songs from the potentially-confused audience is pretty funny. That's just my interpretation, though. They probably loved it!
The real reason to check out this tape, though, is the B-side, humorously entitled "Copyright," which consists of two covers. The first of their covers is "The Crazy Girl" by Black Flag. It's not surprising at all that a band that has been described as sounding like, among other bands, later-era Black Flag, would cover them. Also, I bet at least half of these dudes saw them play this song live, so they've earned it, baby. The cover is slightly faster than the original and consists of both reverbed vocals and a little more riffing, branding it with the Pollution stamp. The second cover is "Familiar And Plain" by the Richmond hardcore band Honor Role. To be honest, I had never even heard of this band, but when I saw them play this song live I was absolutely blown away by the heaviness. While the studio recording doesn't capture that raw energy, it's still incredible and might be my favorite of the two covers.
There aren't many copies left if you're not an NYC-resident, so be sure to order from Vinyl Rites ASAP. Also, get stoked for future releases. I know I am.

Pissed Jeans:King of Jeans
released 2009
ah...the band that kicked off the great tight and shiny debate of '08
but with this album...they seemed to have found their way out of the sweaty stink of the jesus lizard's shadow (though bits and pieces left with them...because when something like that touches you...it touches you) and moved onto seattle circa the late 80's/early 90's
they come off sounding like u-men vocalist john bigley fronting mudhoney...with a hint of nirvana's IN UTERO and some early melvins
and maybe it's not just coincidence that this is their first (correction: second) album for sub pop...perhaps the label is trying recapture their "i'm a loser" aesthetic (the label is a long way from what they used to be...as it seems like they traded in their torn pants/t-shirt fresh from the floor/combat boots look for scarves/high school sports team shirts/clove cigarettes/and tight pants)
so what you need to do is put down that messenger bag...

JawBreaker Busy
I guess this song first attracted me this week because of the title. My single friends and I are always bitching about our married friends and how "busy" they are. We spend most of our adult lives working and sleeping; then add familial "obligations" into the mix and the extra things that must be done to handle the extra expenses of the little ones (extra work, going back to school...) and, yeah, I can understand being busy; my sympathy and patience goes out to those folks! But then there are the others, married or otherwise, who clutter their lives with so much... intent on living "better" through a concentration and saturation of busy activity. Whatever happened to smelling the roses... reading a book? Maybe I've been reading a little too much Proust lately (yes, I will read the whole fucking thing this time), but ride your bike during rush hour and you'll see that everyone seems to be in a hyper-tense rush to get to the next phase of their day, psychotically and with a disregard sometimes for others' lives. Everything must be canned and packaged for easy and fast preparation, even our information and news. We watch our world from the window of a high-speed train, and wonder how we got to the age we're at so quickly. This folly becomes painfully apparent at times like these, when I realize I've become one of those people. Then I complain of my victimization by life, by my boss, but how much of that stress is self-imposed? Lots to figure out here, but I digress. How about some more Jawbreaker?!
Blake, or at least the persona of "Busy," will always find the time to help you when you're in need. Especially when you're on the brink of suicide. Comforting, eh? I've always thought so. Not to mention, the "Busy" 7" was the first piece of vinyl I ever owned by this, one of my favorite, bands. It's a brilliant early track with many of the Jawbreaker hallmarks present and accounted for: blurry but catchy melody, a special wit with language, and a hint of the sardonic. Turn off the TV, maybe even turn off the lights, and drink it in, my friends...
"Busy" by Jawbreaker (ripped from the 7" on Shredder Records)

The Hospitals
Not particularly sure why I've decided to share these albums now. There's never a bad time, I suppose. The Hospitals are a noise rock duo from Portland, Oregon. They're sorta like Lightning Bolt yet they stick closer to the garage rock side of the spectrum of noise rock whereas I think of Lightning Bolt as more math rock related. Really splitting hairs as it is all loud and abrasive in the end. The albums are not really that new but they're something to stop and visit if you missed them when they were released. Filled with pounding drums, charged howling and fuzzed out guitar the two of them can make for a raunchy listen. Also of note is that Rob Enbom of Eat Skull cut his teeth in this group and fellow member Rod Meyer was once in the Hospitals too (though I believe he left before these recordings). Hope you enjoy the offering, pilgrims.

world ends girlfriend
sea totalmente alegre y divertido. Escuchar canción “Magical Romantic Freestyle”.
