Botch - Discography
Genre: Metalcore
Website: Myspace
For Fans Of: Twelve Tribes, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Textures
To any noisy, wannabe crazy "metalcore" band, this band was your daddy; a damn good daddy you should have bought a #1 Dad mug for back in the day. Botch is wild, spastic, and 110% awesome. The members of this band went on to form other awesome bands such as Narrows, These Arms Are Snakes, and Minus The Bear...if you're not interested by now you're crazy. By the way, the band We Are The Romans, is massively unworthy of their moniker.

Here’s some of newest material from popular lo-fi label Woodsist, except the difference here is that Moon Duo isn’t lo-fi at all. Moon Duo is the joint project of Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson, who is also from Wooden Shjips. Escape is their debut release on Woodsist, which manages to put you in a trance and be mind-opening at the same time. The tracks mostly consists of around 7-minute jams on a singular fuzzy riff, with drug-induced solos and unrecognizable lyrics. If you’re a 60s/70s psychedelic junkie like I am, you will love this

Year: 2010
Location: Virginia, USA
Label: Captured Tracks

02. Promise
A few weeks ago, I posted the 7″ track “Summer Holiday” from one-man bedroom project Wild Nothing, and since then it hasn’t stopped spinning in my head. “Cloudbusting” is the newest 7″ from Jack Tatum, the man behind Wild Nothing, and one of the newest release for Captured Tracks. Check out his soaring rendition of Kate Bush’s “Cloudbusting”, along with dreamy b-side “Promise”. Look out for a debut LP sometime this year, it should be something to be excited about

Intifada – Intifada (2004)

Pues a mi me tripea.http://www.myspace.com/joobkicksnare

Artist: Rational Animals
Album: Distorted Temptation 7"
Release: 2009
Label: Feral Kid
Tracklist:
1. How To Despise
2. Dark Eyes
3. Everybody's Cool Friend
4. Games And Fun
5. Distorted Temptation
Rational Animals piqued my interested with their pretty solid debut 7", Perception Becomes Reality, but it didn't blow me away like I had hoped. Still, I figured I'd peep their new 7" after seeing their cool yet LONG live show and found myself blown away. For those of you who haven't heard them, the band is often described as playing a style of hardcore pretty indebted to late-era Black Flag sound. To me though, they sound like Gone's "Insidious Distraction" with vocals. And really, the band is more than just a derivative of that sound. The BF comparisons can end with the music, though, as the singer is way too soft compare, even pulling off an Ian MacKaye laugh in the title track.
Every song on this is a straight-up nerd rager. Distorted Temptation sounds like a slightly more furious version of the I Can See You EP, particularly extra-riffy/wanky songs like "Dark Eyes" and "Everybody's Cool Friend." "Games And Fun," which appeared on the Drugged Conscience comp The World Itself Is A Bad Dream, is their hardest hitting song and is one of their finest moments. All in all, these songs kick with an extra grooviness not often found in hardcore these days. This is a solid improvement over their first release and I hope Will and co. can keep up the good work.

Auto?Automatic?? - Live @ Crowbar 3/12/10
A time ago I posted Auto?Automatic?? and praised them as a good example of the math rock I enjoy. This remains the case, and to my surprise the band is appreciative of my passing out their album for the readers of this blog and sent me a live recording for everyone to listen to. Recorded at a bar in Tampa it is a remarkably clear set of excellent instrumental numbers. Now, I'm not a musician, but these guys sound like the really know what they're doing as they plow through these longish songs. I must say a big thank you to them for sharing it with me for I've been listening to it as I am stuck inside writing papers, and nothing because instrumental music for writing. So say thank you to Auto?Automatic?? and maybe go see them if they come by your town.http://www.mediafire.com/?lynyyj5jvne
Cruiser:Sunshine Woman
Good old Portland, OR. I can't beleive this band has only two people in it. This is some of the craziest two-man stuff I've ever heard, in that there isn't any loops being deployed at any time. One track, "Frampo," sounds like there are four or five different guitar parts going on at the same time, but still.. NO LOOPS!!! All finger-picked guitar work (unless I got even more wrong information), with some killer drums to boot. They had this posted for free on their bandcamp page (cruiserdudes.bandcamp.com), I just separated the tracks and uploaded it to mediafire. I think I did it right; I think I might've gotten some of the song names wrong, since the scan of the track list was kind of difficult to make out. There are a few interludes in between a few songs, also. This was self-released in a run of 100 tapes. They're all gone now, so just enjoy their great music.

We're From Japan

(The Sin in Grey)

Combatwoundedveteran - This Is Not An All Erect, All-Red Neon Body
(Six! Two! Two! Mayhem)
(Put 'Em In a Body Bag Jhonny!)

I Need Sleep, to me, has become one of those bands that you constantly check up on because just about everything they do is either fun/interesting/completely unpredictable or all of the above. With their newest adventure, Fun Tunnel finds I Need Sleep diving into the world of Speed Racer. From their BandCamp, “Inspired by hot waves and max speed. Jams that will put you behind the wheel of a T-180 and into a realm of glorious sun-bathed shores. Racing is in the blood. The blood is on the beach.” Just from that, you really can’t take any of Fun Tunnel too seriously. The music is insanely strange, as most of it sounds like they threw a bunch of gorillas tripping on acid into a tropical band room where the walls are so brightly colored, it hurts your eyes. None of this should come off as bad, just make sure you strap yourself in for the ride!

Army of the Pharaohs – The Unholy Terror

Orchard Thief : WORK
So I found out one day last week that Vacation Dad is touring the east coast this summer with Farms, Bad Tanya, and Orchard Thief. I think it's clear from what I'm posting right now that I'm really glad I looked up that last one. This album is darker than you'd expect of something that is the perfect thing to listen to on a summer day that's hot enough for your back to get stuck to your t-shirt but breezy enough to toss your hair into knots. Think of a minimal version of Real Estate, but moodier, like Crystal Stilts; and then take out the lo-fi fuzz, leaving just reverb and delay and open space; then strip the drum kit down to a few floor toms, a snare, and the occasional shaker, to keep the beats tribal. Add in a pinch of early Appleseed Cast and Sharks Keep Moving, and you're getting kinda close, but you still haven't listened yet. And you must.
You'd be missing out if you didn't also get the two songs No Conclusion posted a few days ago. They're gonna be on an upcoming split with Pawlic (performing under the name Glass Buds), and they're both really killer.

Hassan I Sabbah - Discography
(Not So In Tune With Shells)
(Watching the Eyes of Someone Lying)

Indian Summer - Science 1994 (2002)
http://www.myspace.com/indiansummersongs
Genre: Post-Hardcore, Screamo
Website: Myspace
For Fans Of: Lavotchkin, Moss Icon, I Hate Myself
Indian Summer are definitely on the wild side of the Post-Hardcore/Screamo movement. They have some slow and pretty parts that almost always build up into hectic, spastic portions very reminiscent of Lavotchkin's intense sound (if it had a more unpolished recording quality). Not really too much to be said album this album but that it rules and you should give it a listen.

Dum Dum Girls have definitely generated some big buzz from all of their fuzzed-out 60’s garage-pop songs released last year on various 7″s and EPs, leading up to their 2010 debut LP, I Will Be, on Sub Pop. I haven’t given it a full listen yet, but “Bhang Bhang, I’m A Burnout” was enough for me to really get caught by these tunes. Dum Dum Girls are doing a good set of shows with Girls at the beginning of April across the Midwest and East Coast, check their Myspace for dates.

Sharks Keep Moving ST

Financial Panther - Self Titled
Tracklist:
1..... Quick! Create a Diversion
2..... Three Cheers for the Pantsuit Brigade
3..... I Can't Be Sexist, I Read Heartattack

Hot Chip - The Warning (2006)
Genre: Indie
Hot chip are an dance-y indie alt-rock band that have been making some waves for the past few years with their lovable melodic songs. A fuzzy tone gives them a dreamy, smooth sound that goes down easy, Infectious melodies and catchy lyrics give them an amicable sound that's easy to like but sometimes can be rather hard to take seriously. Lots of fun and rather relaxing, worth a listen over their allegedly average new material.

N.A.S.A. - The Spirit of Apollo (2009)
enre: Hip-Hop
Website: Myspace
For Fans Of: Funky beats with tons and tons of guest appearances
My musical tastebuds have been goofy lately. My 3 most played albums over the past few days have been City of Caterpillar's self titled, Iron & Wine's Shephard's Dog, and this. Strange, huh? Well this is the most interesting hip hop album I have ever listened to. N.A.S.A. is made up of 2 producers, Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon. They make sick beats and somehow they've gotten acts like Kanye West, Karen O, RZA, Tom Waits, Spank Rock, etc. to perform over them. Sounds awkward but somehow it works.. Very well. Check it out, and have fun.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Discography
Genre: Post-Rock/Experimental/Genius
Website: Myspace
For Fans Of: Mono, Yndi Halda, Music
Godspeed You! Black Emperor were one of the greatest bands of all time. That's not even an opinion - it's 100% solid truth. They are generally pigeonholed into 'post-rock', just because it's easier to label them as such, but they really took influences from all manner of genres - progressive rock, classical music, post-punk and avant-garde to name a few. Their sound is epic and sprawling, mixing in vocal samples of insane preachers with their eerie string arrangements and simply breathtaking climaxes, oh and sometimes they use a glockenspiel. Yep, a glockenspiel. I fucking love glockenspiel. If you've never listened to the band before (haha, yeah right) I suggest you start with Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada, since it's essentially the perfect piece of music and is shorter and (in my opinion) more easy to digest than the rest of their discography. Best band ever or best band ever?

Gaza - I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die (2006)
Genre: Chaotic Metalcore/Sudge
For Fans Of: Engineer, Converge, Stray From The Path
Black Market Activities has had a slew of solid bands in their roster over the years (some notable acts include Deadwater Drowning, Engineer, Premonitions Of War, and The Network). However, Gaza rises above all of those bands and manages to create one of the heaviest, sludgiest, meaning sounding albums of all time with IDCWIGWID. There are a few moments of melody in this record that at first caught me by surprise, but they fit quite nicely. Imagine a more structured, heavier Converge and you will have a general idea of the sound Gaza has going on. If you are a fan of any of the aforementioned bands, check this album out immediately, it's a must have.

V/A Guilt By Association
Have you ever felt embarrassed listening to one-hit wonders or pop gems of yesteryear? Fear not. Your favorite Indie superstars are giving the OK by joining in together for "Guilt By Association", a collection of songs by today's most exciting Indie talent re-interpreting their favorite guilty pleasure pop songs. Petra Haden delivers a soaring acapella version of Journey's anthem Don't Stop Believin'. Will Oldham/Bonnie 'Prince' Billy turns Mariah Carey's Can't Take That Away into a bittersweet synth ballad. Jim O'Rourke, who produced albums for Wilco, Beth Orton and Joanna Newsom transforms the Spice Girls' ballad Viva Forever into something that wouldn't have been out of place as a take out of a Beth Orton session.
Lets all wallow in our guilt and enjoy these remembered gems, indie-style. yeah.

Bucket Full of Teeth - Discography
If everything has a price, then nothing has a value".

I love Cub. I love Cub so much that I figured they were some sort of super staple of twee pop, kinda of like a gateway drug into the vast candyland of the genre. However, I asked my twee-loving friend if she liked Cub and said "never listened to them and barely hear anything about them." I was shocked! Granted, I never fact-check, so she might be a freak exception, but I immediately took this to mean that no one liked Cub! I had to change this, I thought. And what do I do when I want to inspire chance? I blog from a Holiday Inn Express in Castle Rock, Colorado.
During our (un?)fortunate Pop-Punk Week we had awhile back, I wrote about their lone LP, Mauler. That album, while great, is so far off from the more representative sound of their first release, Betti-Cola. Originally released as a 3x7" (as cute as it is annoying, kinda like the music!) and rereleased on CD, this might be their most popular release. Though, I love the fuller-sounding Come Out, Come Out more, but that's just me!
This album has their most bare-bone production. The band plays really minimal pop music that is obviously inspired by Beat Happening (whose song "Cast A Shadow" they cover,) only they're way less creepy (i.e. no Calvin Johnson.) The band's most well-known song, "My Chinchilla" makes an appearance. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I like this song, as it's so incredibly cute and annoying that it's uncomfortable. Still, it's their hit. Most of the songs don't quite reach this level of cuteness, thank god, and I think you'll be able to absorb all this.
Unfortunately tagged as "cuddlecore" or just as purely happy pop music (and there's no denying the cuteness factor is hard to take,) the band still manages to churn out some more depressing tunes that always seem to be their best. "Someday" and "Electric Chair" are two of my favorite songs from the band and evoke more sorrow than they do lollipop fingers. It's worth it alone for these types of tracks. Either way, I love this band and I hope you can get into them too. If it's just a little too much for you, but you're still intrigued, then I highly recommend Come Out, Come Out, which is a much more mature effort with better songwriting and a more muscular sound.

I always wanted to review a great (see subjective opinion) record that did not seem to be getting the hype (see mysterious guy hardcore) that it deserved. I knew that the Social Circkle City Shock LP was coming out last fall, ordered it in clear from Brandon at No Way, put my needle to the vinyl and voila: punk bliss. I knew that this was going to be it, the unhyped release of 2009. Then procrastination and being a bad friend happened. Fat guy hardcore and mysterious guy hardcore happened. And before I knew it I let Adam Whites down. What a terrible, terrible friend I am to everyone (especially the contributor to this fine blog).
So I missed the time to review City Shock and decided to review the next thing I was excited about: the Dry-Rot Philistine LP. "But G****** (see previously cited interview for reasons), you are going against the anti-hype rule. Dry-Rot is the king of mysterious hardcore hype. What are you doing?" I felt that this LP was known about through partial distribution of 100 test presses and when it was finally released it seemed like those who were excited about it had already been listening to it for six months and those who were lukewarm were not waiting in anticipation by visiting the Parts Unknown webstore everyday alternating between the LP section and the section of the webstore featuring horned-rimmed glasses. But the lukewarm feelings should have melted after listening because this LP is fannnntastic. It is so phat it is more like fffffaaaattttt fat. Car horn fat. After three 7"s and a single off of the album on Home Invasion, Philistine sees Dry-Rot experimenting and plunging further down into the mysterious guy hardcore genre gene pool.
Each side starts off with fast paced great jams perfect for punk themed dinner parties where guests should be able to hang their fixed-gears from accessible hooks for storage and style! Highlights include "Hairless," "Maul Test," and "Observer." Vocals are weird (I wonder why though because soaking the world in bleach seems like more of a germaphobic persons lifetime goal than a mysterious guy hardcore lyric) and match well with the fast paced plunders. The guitars and recording are not drowned in dirtiness leaving me with the conclusion that there are no metal trash cans or metal storage lockers in California (or at least ones of the same quality that many New York, Florida, Massachusetts, and other bands seek in between their breaks of cock-shirting and diddling children when recording their magnum opus'). The jam tracks break up the relentless assault well and they end before the riffs become monotonous.
Buy this record or kitten mittens, which ever you choose you know you will be making the right decision.

Artist: Dads Album: Invisible Blouse 7"
Tracklist:
1. Invisible Blouse
2. Homo Concentration
One of my favorite singles of last year, Dads' debut 7", to steal from the Soft Languages description, consists of "two ecstatic fuck-you's to unite fathers and children everywhere." The band plays a style of music similar to that of late 80s and early 90s college rock, only more blown out and married to a, um, dad aesthetic. While definitely catchy, it's juxtaposed with really fucked-up vocals. Somewhere between human wailing and the death throes of a dying bear, these tortured sounds weigh down the listener, maximizing the agony they convey. To be honest, it's kind of oppressive, but, ultimately, I think I enjoy that feeling after I listen to a song and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The A-side, "Invisible Blouse," is the main attraction, acting as the perfect introduction for the band to the world. The song is insanely captivating and leaves me wishing it was twice as long. "Homo Concentration" changes things up a bit. Instead of a propulsive rock song, it's a slow, torturous crawl, which exacerbates vocals' emotional effects even more.
I can't wait to hear more from this band. As I've previously stated, this was one of my favorite singles last year. "Invisible Blouse" is so incredibly good. Praise and thanks to the three gentlemen who are responsible for this. Be sure to pick this 7" up from the blossoming Soft Languages. It's worth it for the ridiculous E.T.-themed insert alone.

Artist: DJ Screw
Album: All Screwed Up
Release: 1994
Label: Bigtyme Recordz
Tracklist:
1. Intro
2. UGK - Short Texas
3. Point Black - Wreckless feat. K-Rino
4. UGK - Pregnant Pussy
5. Point Blank - After I Die
6. 20-2-Life - Backstreets feat. PSK-13
7. UGK - Something Good
8. 20-2-Life - Inside looking Out
9. Point Blank - My Mind Went Blank
10. PSK-13 - 13 Ways
11. Point Blank - Straighten It Out
12. PSK-13 - Headin' Fo My Trunk
13. 20-2-Life - Da Music
I'm a firm believer that every genre has a legit beginning. Look at modern day pop-punk. Most of the shitty metalcore-pop-punk hybrids will tell you that they're main influence Lifetime. Hell, there is even an awful band named after The Movielife's This Time Time Next Year.
Now a couple years ago the world felt the presence of Houston hip-hop. A big part of that movement was the remixing or "chopping and screwing" of big rap albums. For the most part, that shit was fucking awful. I decided to spend some time looking into it and possibly see what people saw in it. What I found was that the whole thing was the baby of one DJ. DJ Screw started slowing down and remixing music in 1984 when he was 13. During the 90s he took Houston (mostly the south) by storm. He has over 200 mixtapes and put out five albums. He was completely legit about his music. He proved that it wasn't about money when Priority records offered him a big record deal and he declined. He just wanted to make music, do drugs, and hang the fuck out with his boys. That shit is so fucking real (minus the drugs). The codeine actually killed him, though. Bummer.
This is Mr. Screw's first album. Because it was early in the game for him, his selection of songs to screw up are Houston's elite and not the world's. But Houston hip-hop at the time was grimy, slow and vulgar, and a perfect fit for where DJ Screw was at. He made every song dark and heavy. The songs that showcase this are "Something Good," "After I Die," and "Inside Looking Out." My fav is the then up and coming UGK's "Something Good." The beat is absolutely incredible and Pimp C (another Houston rapper that has since died because of codeine) shines while talking about loving his booty getting licked by your sister. They also both kill it on the vile "Pregnant Pussy." It's slowed down so you can really take in the lyrics.
I can satisfy her and at the same time give the kid a pacifier. Enjoy.

AIDS Wolf-LIVE DETH EP
So, I'm a fan of AIDS Wolf, big time. I hear a lot of comparisions between them and Arab on Radar, and all I have to say is "yes, but a little no." This came out a little before 2006s (?) album, The Lovvers LP, and like the name implies, it's live. As much as that might put off some people (whether familiar or not with the sound) this is a solid recording, much much more clearer than their Pas Rapport cassette EP, and almost passes with their studio recordings. As an added bonus, this includes some type of "alternate versions" of the songs "Panty Mind" and "We Multiply" off the Lovvers.. Enjoy this mess of distorted, um, mess...
TRACKS:
1. Unholy Swill
2. Panties Minds
3. Volker's Stroker
4. I Multiply

The third EP from this elusive Boston hardcore outfit. There's almost no info on them anywhere (last time I checked), and all of their stuff has been released on the awesome hardcore label Youth Attack Records, run by Mark McCoy (of Das Oath, Charles Bronson, Holy Molar, Failures fame). They are bruuuuuuuuuutaaaaaaaaaallllllllll.

Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson

Muerdelágrimas - Enterrar A Una Madre

StreetLight Manifesto:99 SOngs of RevoluTion
Streetlight's album leaked and will be released tomorrow for real. This is volume 1 of 8 that will be released consisting of 99 cover songs. I normally hate ska, cover songs, and especially Streetlight Manifesto, but I'm really enjoying this whole thing. Good song selection and good covers.

Keith Fullerton Whitman
Album: Playthroughs
Release: 2002
Label: Kranky
Tracklist:
1. Track3a (2waynice)
2. Feedback Zwei
3. Fib01a
4. ACGTR SVP
5. Modena
Get ready 2 dream. Keith Fullerton Whitman's first full-length album Playthroughs is not only his best work, but is a pillar of 2000s ambient drone. The album was made with nothing but a guitar and some very complex pedals, using some sort of mathematical composition method that I won't even pretend to understand.
What I can comprehend is that this is one of the best electronic albums I've ever heard; it's absolutely stunning. Each of the five songs is amazing and each one improves upon its predecessor. "Track3a (2waynice)" opens the album with a steady, high pitched tone that rings out with the occasional low-end pulse. It's simple, yet effective. The appropriately titled "Feedback Zwei" slowly and subtly builds its way up into waves of feedback and static. "Fib01a" is the closest thing to KFW's Hrvatski project in that it features glitching, but is far more ambient than anything produced under that name. The track shares a striking resemblance to Farben's "Live At The Tahoe" in its balance of glitch and ambiance.
The next two tracks are where it's at, though. "ACGTR SVP" is the most diverse of the tracks, acting almost as the rising sun. It's the densest track here and it slowly ascends until it reaches a place of shimmering, empyrean glory, all before slowly receding into the distance, gorgeously. Still to come, however, is the true highlight of the album: the closer "Modena." The piece is seventeen minutes of pure aural bliss. KFW returns us to the simplicity of the "Track3a (2waynice)," but adds bubbling and gentle pulsations. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard and I wish it would never end.
Playthroughs is a great introduction to one of the contemporary masters of the craft. If you dig this, be sure to check out his other incredible (yet very different) releases, particularly Lisbon and Multiples.

SOTW:Middelalder:La Casa FanTom
I've been listening to a lot of La Casa Fantom lately. Almost daily. After you wear out a record, revisits are inevitable, but I've been playing their self-titled LP like it's brand new. It just doesn't get old for me, and fewer bands can nail such schizoid tempo and genre shifts so seamlessly, especially considering there are only two instruments. Grindcore one second; spacey rock the next. This one's pretty much an instrumental, so the member's chops are all there is to rely on. Guitars? Who needs 'em!?

My Morning Jacket - Z (2005)

The Big Pink - Brief History of Love (2009)
énero: Electro-Rock, Indie Rock

The duo signed to the 4AD label in 2009, and won the prestigious NME Philip Hall Radar Award for best new act. To date, they have released four singles, with their debut album A Brief History of Love released in September 2009.

"La Dispute is a five-piece band from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Combining elements of post-hardcore, progressive rock, and screamo, they have drawn comparisons to bands including At the Drive-In, mewithoutYou, and Saetia.
La Dispute had released an EP, Vancouver (2006), a 7" (2008), and two experimental pieces: Here, Hear (2008, released in a mini-disc format) and Here, Hear II (2008, released as a 7")."

This RoUtine is HELL
This Routine Is Hell, great hardcore punk from the Netherlands. These guys just came big from an European tour and they trashed everything. Great guys, great music. Following them live since their name were 'De Tarrels', which is a long long time ago. Give them a listen, their new album is fucking sweet!

City of CaTerPillar
City of Caterpillar was a hardcore/punk band from Richmond, Virginia that broke up in 2003. Their sound varies to a certain degree, but they commonly have dramatic buildups and driving melodies. Post-rock was obviously an influence on the bands song structure. The band shares/shared members with Pg.99, Stop It!!, Malady, Darkest Hour and Ghastly City Sleep.

Somewhat indeish light screamo with really sweet guitars and drums. The end of "Your House Song" on their myspace is really, really good. The tremolo and the screams just mixes up into a wonderful... mix.

Black Hole Kids – Demo (2010)
itrate: 160 kBit/s
genre: Screamo, Punk
country: USA
notes: Yesterday I was contacted by a very friendly member of BHK, so he gave me their demo to take a listen. Honestly, instant liking of the tunes! The four songs continued to spin nonstop on my player, since I was quite attracted by the vocal and the sort of catchyness of the melodies. BHK is influenced by a variety of genres, such as crust, punk, screamo and post-hardcore, but the thing I liked the most was the ever clinging tone of ’80s hardcore. Very interesting band, hope you boys and girls check them out

The Caligula Effect: A Compilation

Insuiciety – The Cure for the Truth (2009)
This is their first full lenght, and wow is it great! 5 songs, 30 minutes of juicy, slow and thundering sludge sound! Definitely one of the best vocals in sludge genre and yeah you guessed it, it’s a female singer! She absolutely blew me away live (as well as the rest of the band), stunning performance which really puts a seal of “perfection” on this act. Check it out, they deserve the attention.

2..... El manso tronco de Bruce Lee
