Octaves - Greener Pastures
stumbled upon these guys the other day and was instantly charmed by their list of influences, which included such greats as pg. 99. Their music didn't fail to deliver. Though obviously influenced by such bands as Dillinger, La Dispute, and The Chariot, Octaves still has their own sound, and it's a fantastic sound devoid of pussy singing and tacky sweeps.
From what I can tell, Octaves seems to be yet another tragically unrecognized band. I can see no reason that they don't have more than 304 listeners on last.fm.

The Almighty Defenders - The Almighty Defenders (2009)
Earlier this month I shared King Khan & the Shrines, so I won't give the story on who he is again. I will tell you that he and his current bandmate, Mark Sultan who is BBQ in the King Khan and BBQ Show, have been up to some collaborating. In this case with the members of the Black Lips while holing up with Khan in Berlin. Basically a garage rock jam session branded as a band. Though I think it was fully recorded it the studio, it has the roughness of a live recording. This is made all the better in that a main source of inspiration seems to be gospel, which is naturally meant to be preformed live. It certainly possesses a feeling of nostalgic reflection on the earlier period of rock music, when the influence of soul and gospel were readily apparent. This album isn't as fast-paced and jazzy as Khan's work with the shrines, but does feel very close to the most recent album with BBQ.

Fiends "We come for your beer"
1984 saw the release of many a classic album, so it was certain the Fiends "We've Come For Your Beer" would be overlooked. A tongue in cheek Californian horror show with track titles like "Riot in The Men's Room", "Die Bob Die" and "You Make Me Sick". This LP even features an MC5 cover of "Ramblin' Rose". Their sound veered more to the sillier side of punk, and to a kind of rockin' cowboy themed movie. BemisBrain Records released it and this remained popular for a few punks and Weekend Warriors.
They also released a second LP "Gynecology" that featured the top 10 hit "Hugh G. Erection" among other blockbusting hits.

Gay Beast 7 INCH
So, yeah, I know I haven't been keeping this lace very busy lately. No excuses really, I'm just a lazy.
Eh. Sorry guys and gals.
Here's a weird band for fans of the newer Skin Graft wave, (i.e. much more danceable noisy rock) Two guys and a girl in this, just drums, guitar, and keyboard. Their sound is one all their own, and thus further alienating anyone that likes anything else on here.
Eh. Sorry guys and gals.
TRACK LIST:
1. Multi Purpose, Anti Form
2. Pressing Hard
3. Small Head. Large Torso. Crushing Grip/Whitewash

Unwound + Versus - Split
Label: Troubleman
Year: 2000
Before Versus, there was a band called Flower, and after Flower, there was a band called Unwound. Versus and Unwound each picked a Flower song they liked, learned it (presumably easier for Versus since, you know, they had been in Flower), recorded it, and put it out on this cute little 7". Easy.
Now, it's no secret how much I like Unwound. I believe that has been made very clear, and I see no reason to reiterate that love now. Versus was a band I never really "liked" per se. They had one record that I can't remember the title of right now, that I did have (or still have I suppose) that was good, but otherwise they were a little too tame for my tastes. Which is strange considering how tame some of my record collection is, so maybe "tame" isn't the right descriptor, but they named themselves after a Mission Of Burma song if that tells you anything.
Their track is pleasant enough indie rock though, so I'm fine with it.
I won't pretend to say I ever heard Flower, so I don't know how these stack up to the originals, but if you like Unwound, then you should peep it. Unwound is worth the price of admission, which in this case is free, so not the greatest endorsement or analogy, but the point is, they are good, I love them, and this song is neat. There.

Snöras is a 4-piece screamo band from Norway featuring members of Angora Static and Lukestar that was formed in 2005. Here's their second album titled 'Plague Waters' which was released in 2008. The song titles are messed up, but I really don't care. Check this out if you haven't already. Enjoy.

Dr. Blount - Dr. Blount's Extended Sound Play

Final ConFlict: Self Titled 7 Inch

Album: Self Titled 7"
Release: 1983
Label: Reflex
Tracklist:
1. All In The Family
2. The Lines Have Faded

4. Self-Defeated
While a plethora of acts shared the name, the Midwestern, U.S.A.'s Final Conflict towers mightly above the rest, despite only having released one, four-song 7" that was produced by thee Bob Mould. This Final Conflict EP sounds like Cows And Beers-era Die Kreuzen mixed with United Mutation, all sung by a tougher-sounding Rebel Truth vocalist. Or something. Released in 1983 on Reflex, it came out around the same time as many 80s hardcore classics, like Mould's own Metal Circus, yet has suffered from an odd bout of obscurity, which is strange considering these four songs sound just as vibrant as anything created by their peers.
Less than a week ago, at Chaos in Tejas, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this 7", like the first two Willful Neglect 12"s, has been repressed by Havoc and that there are still copies available. These two releases, both engineered by Steve Fjelsted, are classics that are not to be missed.

In the 90's, a friend of mine used to volunteer at a community college radio station. It didn't broadcast, except into the school cafeteria, but he got to chill and be part of the staff, ordering records and talking to labels. The dude got a stipend to work there one semester, and for some reason, the station manager, who happened to be a techno DJ, hated him, gave him bad reviews, and dude got fired, even though he knew he was requesting techno CDs from labels for the sole purpose of taking them home to use them in his DJ sets. So my bro did what anyone in their youth would do: take revenge. dude backed his mom's SUV, and took almost the entire punk/hardcore/indie vinyl collection, and most of the CDs.
Which is where dude got a promo copy of Drunk On The Moon by San Diego band No Knife. After getting pummeled by Vempire or Dark Faerytales in Phallustein and brought back down by Tigermilk, he sat in Montgomery County traffic and let No Knife wash over me so much emo/alt goodness. It was a sound so comfortable yet surprising at the same time. It's as though the push and pull of the era was focused into taut equilibrium; the angular-isms were relaxingly smoothed out. Not to say that it was a complete pop-ification of the genre (not unlike going from Nothing Feels Good to Very Emergency)- we have drummer Ike Zaremba and producer Mark Trombino to hold down the fort, giving No Knife the post-hardcore, later-era Jawbox, Drive Like Jehu-style edge that made them (on their first two albums) one of the best, yet underrated, post-hardcore/emo/alt bands of the 90's.
I found it hard to find Drunk On The Moon on the internet, so here you go, ripped from my personal CD copy that my friebd got in 1996. You should definitely also download Hit Man Dreams.

NacHut Report - 9th Overflowing...Milky Slaughterhouse...Dream Of Incubator (2010)
I want to begin by apologizing to bands that send me their stuff and I don't get around to it. I have a ton of music they I have already downloaded and listen to, new stuff that I just found, and get many albums sent to me by bands looking for some exposure. If I miss it is because of the volume of files I haven't got time to listen through, but I'd like help with this if there is anyone eager to post on the blog about the many albums submitted for sharing. The reason I bring this up is that NacHut Report is just such a group that has offer their album for free distribution on the internet. My eye got caught immediately by last.fm considering my follow, though currently defunct, co-writer Warren's music, Foxes in Fiction. The e-mail they sent me related that they are a Polish-Italian band and this is their first full-length album. It is certainly in the experimental vein, but that isn't giving too much detail. It has a bit of a noise/sound art feel to it but maintains a rather steady and enjoyable beat to it. Similar praise as the previously posted album, though this one has vocals it is they are hardly the sort the is gonna shake you out of concentration while nonetheless being handsomely done. Overall, it possesses a very modern tone to the album that is refreshing.

Yamamoto Seiichi - Nu Frequency (2003)
A change of pace of with this album. Yamamoto Seiichi is a Japanese musician that is a fixture of the independent scene in Osaka and he gained some notability when he worked with the illustrious noise rock group Boredoms. This is merely one of his several solo releases that he's been actively producing for over a decade. It is closer to this blog's namesake in that it could actually be classified as space rock. Naturally, as much space rock can be described it is like a crossing of ambient and noise without really being either genre, instead demonstrating something unique. Nu Frequency sounds like a collection of samples until you give it a long enough listen, so be warned. It has been really going well with my homemade wine I've been drinking due to lack of funds these days. Because it is instrumental it is a really good album to play when reading or writing, which I have trouble listening to lyrical driven songs during. Calmer than most of the things I have been posting lately yet not devoid of liveliness.

King Khan & The Shrines - What Is?! (2007)
Finally able and willing to post something since by return from the great nation of Canada. Suitably in honor of Montreal I am sharing one of my favorite musicians from that glorious city, I'd murder for a metro like that. I've previously shared The King Khan and BBQ Show on the blog, and that is the most recent King Khan project. However, there is the band preceding that, King Kahn & The Shrines. Khan is one of those musicians that shows is control of the genre by being able to seamlessly blend in various influences and styles into his songs. What Is?! doubtlessly has the traditional garage rock inspirations like The Stooges and MC5, but also borrows from the sleazier 90s garage scene without mimicking. Overall, a very happy, mildy-psychedelic album about having a good time.

Saccharine Trust =Surviving you Always
Punk rock Pagan Icons Saccharine Trust were definitely a band that didn't follow the generalization of their hardcore marketing campaign. Experimenting with fusion, art, free jazz as well as poetry, they remain true to the punk rock ethos. I saw this band play way back in the day when they opened for Black Flag on tour and with Earl on bass and the hypnotizing Jack Brewer on vocals, they left an impact on me, which is a lot to be said when you were opening for the mighty Flag.
Their first release "Pagan Icons" which was released in 1981, still remains my favorite record by the group, for "Surviving You Always" was far too forward thinking for my feeble hardcore mind back in the days. As of recent it's been getting a lot of listens here at the PNP commune. So grab a beret, sit down with some coffee and enjoy the sounds of the "Saccharine Trust band."

The Weirdos

Matt Evans DEMO
This post comes from a friend that has graced my ears with his personal music. Matt Evans put down some tracks that he had laying around. He is the guitarist for the DIY punk/hardcore band Just Die! which i recommend listening to their stuff...I will consider them to be local I mean I am in Santo Domingo(El INfierno de Guzman)at the time of this writing ...I have much respect for these boys and to Matt keep writing good music...Oooh side note i think the music sounds like earlier (only because i have not heard later) Rocky Votolato, good solid stuff if that is just demo stuff i cant wait to hear more.......

Ten Grand
Ten Grand, originally known as The Vida Blue, was a 4-piece screamo/post hardcore band from Iowa. They existed from 1998 to 2003 until they broke up due to the tragic death of their vocalist Matt Davis (R.I.P) in Illinois right before a Midwest tour. Here's their LP titled 'The Comprehensive List of Everyone Who Has Ever Done Anything Wrong to Us'. Enjoy.

Dan Auerbach: Keep it Hid
I guess you can say this is more on the hipster side, but I heard this dude on the soundtrack of the movie Up In The Air a few months back and this record is definitely worth checking out. Goin' Home and Whispered Words are great tracks. He's most known for his work in the Ohio based band The Black Keys. Enjoy.

White Town-Alain Delon 7 inch
Artist: White Town
Album: Alain Delon 7"
Release: 1991
Label: Parasol
Tracklist:
1. Hair Like Alain Delon
2. And Then It Changed
3. John Selwyn Gummer
4. Life's Too Short
Depending on whether or not you're a master of either the U.S. or U.K. version of 90's Trivial Pursuit, you may recognize the name White Town. His fluke, 1997 smash hit "Your Woman" was as infectious to the psuedo-alt kids of the post-grunge era as Ebola Richmond was to lab monkeys...aaaaaand that's the best I can do. Iffy.
White Town is not actually the creepy Frenchman from the video above, but is instead an India-to-U.K. Gummi Bear who goes by the name Jyoti Mishra, who is apparently straight edge and, at least in the 90's, a communist. I guess there were red edgemen other than the Manliftingbanner/Seein' Red crew!
90's hardcore aside, I recently re-listened to the legendary spinART compilation ...One Last Kiss in an attempt to actually appreciate it as much as I should. I didn't get very far, though, because I couldn't get past the sixth track, White Town's "Hair Like Alain Delon." I knew who White Town was from "Your Woman," so I left utterly confused by the sound of "Alain Delon," which was part of the classic early 90's indie pop sound and not technopop. A quick Wikipedia search revealed it was indeed the same band. Holy moly!
The only thing that blew my mind more than that revelation was the song itself. It's seriously a pop classic and has been my favorite song for the past six months, at least. In the song, Mishra reveals his wishes to be more like the otherworldly French actor in an attempt to escape this humdrum existence and to overcome his romantic shortcomings. My description fails to come close to giving it justice.
The Alain Delon EP was released on the familiar label Parasol Records and features four songs in the indie pop vein. Aside from "Alain Delon," the other three songs are strong pop offerings and it's great to hear Mishra's songs played with a full band. "Life's Too Short" is probably my other favorite jam on this EP. Really, though, this is an incredible pop gem that, for some reason, has flown way under the radar. Please do yourself a favor and check this out!
Thanks to Pat Stankard of Weed Hounds for ripping this for me! If and when I get more of his early material and, if anyone cares, I'll post more.

The Makers - Shout On! Hip-Notic (1997)
Nostalgia is a dangerous thing and I think I'm getting uncomfortably close with these garage rock albums I've been posting lately. One more won't hurt though. The Makers are one of the more prolific garage acts and have been at it for nearly two decades. This is a compilation from of many of their best songs as it stood circa 1997. A collection of a short, pulsating tracks with fuzzed out guitar and incoherent vocals might make it some like a million other things, but the whole thing stands out do to its nods to previous generations of garage rockers. Feels like a natural evolution from the earlier bands that populated the North American landscape in the 1960s but retains a degree of freshness despite this. Much better than that shit that would dominate the televised music industry just several years after its release. See what you think of them.

Flössin - Lead Singer (2004)
am still working my way through a chunk of new albums in the vetting process for posting so you're still gonna have to bear some not as fresh-off-the-presses releases I already know I like. I know Flössin was probably a big deal at some point, but I still run into too many people that are in the dark for me to be disenchanted in the utility of posting it. Lead Singer is an album born of collaboration by several established musicians. Electronic musician Christopher Willits worked with the wild drummer, Zach Hill of Hella, Nervous Cop, and solo (along with many other projects henceforth) and the esteemed Kid 606. How could someone not like that combination? They didn't disappoint me either. The album is a blend electronic, noise and post-rock influences that pleases the ear with the power of dissonance. I love this sort of think when I have a hangover, it really just soothes my mind.

ARM – Universal Standard Time
