Let's get this out of the way now because I'm sure he already knows he will never outlive the comparisons: This is the drummer of Bon Iver. Yes, he is close friends with Justin Vernon. Yes, it utilizes the same formula, incorporating the same sort of curl-up-and-cry in a cabin in the woods atmospheric ambient folk type music. Hell, it even has the same number of tracks as For Emma. Is it as good as the aforementioned Bon Iver album? I'll admit that I doubted him at first, but if not this comes extremely close. S. Carey is phenomenal at building a mood through his lovely fingerpicking, vocal layering, piano, and sparse drumming to create one of the most instantly beautiful albums I've heard in some time. This is a record that I feel can only be fully appreciated alone. While the ties to Bon Iver are certainly going to help how fast this album spreads, it can quite easily stand on it's own. This is going to hopefully take a lot of people by surprise, and it's something you'll want to have by your side as fall and winter approach.
